Our Cookbooks shelf ranges from everyday household recipe collections to regional and international cuisine, along with food writing and memoir for readers who enjoy cooking as much as reading about it.

Community and church cookbooks, often self-published in small local print runs, are a particular specialty and a favourite among customers researching regional food history. They are frequently the only written record of how a particular town actually ate.

We also carry a solid run of baking references, preserving and canning guides, and mountain-town favourites suited to hearty, cold-weather cooking, alongside broader international cuisine from around the world.

Because cookbooks are used and handled heavily in the kitchen, we grade condition carefully, noting any splatter marks, handwritten notes, or loose pages, though many customers consider a well-used cookbook part of its charm.

This shelf also includes a small collection of drink and cocktail guides, along with specialty diet and nutrition-focused cookbooks for readers cooking around a specific dietary requirement.

Some of the most requested titles in this section are community cookbooks from specific Alberta towns and church groups, many produced decades ago in runs small enough that a single copy in good condition can be genuinely difficult to replace once it sells.

Stock in this section turns over quickly, since community cookbooks rarely see a second print run once the first has sold out. When we do find a fresh batch from an estate sale or a closing church hall, we try to get the strongest titles listed within a few days rather than letting them sit in the back room.

We treat them with the same care as any other regional history title on our shelves, and we will usually mention the town, group, and approximate year when we describe one.

It is also worth checking back on this shelf regularly rather than once. Because so much of what arrives is one-of-a-kind, a title that was not here last month may well be here this week, and a title that is here today may not last long.

Splatters, a broken spine at a favourite page, and a previous cook’s marginal corrections are common in this section. We describe them, and for many buyers they add to the book rather than detract from it.

Spiral-bound community cookbooks are checked for missing pages before listing, since that is the most common fault in this format and the hardest to spot from a photograph.

If a particular copy is short a page or two but is otherwise the only known copy of a title we can find, we will still list it clearly marked as incomplete rather than not offer it at all, since for some regional-history buyers even a partial copy has real value.
